Dr. Stephen I. Esses is a highly respected orthopedic spine surgeon based in Houston and affiliated with Southwest Orthopedic Group. He earned his M.S. and M.D. from the University of Toronto, followed by a rigorous orthopedic residency there. He further honed his expertise during two fellowship years in spinal surgery—one at Harvard University and six-month stints at Chiba University in Japan and as a McLaughlin fellow in Europe. Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Spine Surgery, and Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, Dr. Esses is known as an international authority on spinal disorders. He has developed innovative surgical techniques and implants, authored the Textbook of Spinal Disorders, and publishes extensively.
